Chapter 52

The doctor arrived late that night, long after the village had gone quiet. A small car stopped beyond the outer wall, far enough from the house that no one passing on the road would have reason to notice it. An older woman stepped out with a leather medical bag in one hand and looked around only once before following the guard through the side entrance. She wasn't wearing a uniform, and there was no curiosity in her expression. She seemed to understand from the beginning that she had been brought there for one reason and one reason only.
